HarvestTower™

Vertical growing, composting potential, and small-space productivity — all in one modular cedar tower.
The HarvestTower™ is the vertical heart of HHGS™. Designed as a compact, stackable cedar growing tower, it helps gardeners make better use of height, not just ground space.

And like many good garden ideas, it started simply — with a bucket of potatoes.

From Potato Bucket to Garden Tower

The HarvestTower™ began with a simple question: what if a small vertical growing container could do more than hold soil? The first idea came from growing potatoes in a bucket — layering soil on top of the plants and using vertical space instead of spreading outward. From there, the concept evolved into a cedar tower that could support more than one kind of growing: potatoes, greens, herbs, composting, vermiculture, and experimental small-space food production.
That spirit is still built into the HarvestTower™ today. It is practical, modular, adaptable, and designed for gardeners who want to get more life out of a smaller footprint.

What is the HarvestTower™

The HarvestTower™ is a vertical cedar growing structure made from stacked modular sections. Each module creates planting volume while allowing the tower to be configured for different uses depending on the gardener’s space, crop choices, and growing goals.
Vertical growing

Use height to increase growing capacity in small spaces.

Modular structure

Stacked cedar sections make the tower adaptable and expandable.

Flexible use

Designed for potatoes, greens, herbs, composting, vermiculture, and future growing experiments.

Natural materials

Built with cedar for beauty, durability, and a warmer garden presence than plastic containers.

What can you grow in a HarvestTower™?

The HarvestTower™ is designed for experimentation and flexibility. It can be used as a focused potato tower, a vertical greens station, a herb tower, or as part of a compost-and-growing system within a larger Hexscape™.

How the HarvestTower fits into a HexScape

In an HHGS™ layout, the HarvestTower™ adds vertical productivity and ecosystem function. It can stand beside HexBeds™, anchor a corner of a layout, support composting and vermiculture, or act as a compact growing station where ground space is limited.

While HexBeds™ create the main planting geometry, the HarvestTower™ adds height, rhythm, and another layer of function to the garden.

Best Uses for the HarvestTower™

Small-space gardens
Add growing capacity where horizontal space is limited .

Potato growing
Build from the original idea: growing upward instead of outward.

Compost and vermiculture
Create a living system that helps turn organic matter into garden fertility.

Greens and herbs
Use the upper sections for quick-growing crops close to the kitchen.

Demonstration gardens
Show how vertical growing, modular design, and natural materials can work together.

One Tower, Multiple Formations

These are only some of the uses currently being tested for the HarvestTower™. Its real strength is not just that it grows vertically, but that it can be stacked, unstacked, divided, and reconfigured depending on the crop, the space, and the season.

Current trials include using the full internal growing volume for multiple root crops at once — including potatoes, sweet potatoes, and ginger — as well as succession-style planting with both determinate and indeterminate potatoes. The tower can also be planted in layers, with determinate potatoes grown on multiple levels, or separated into smaller growing modules where space allows. In some layouts, the HarvestTower™ can become four smaller HexBeds; in others, it can be split into two sections, with determinate potatoes growing below and crops like carrots growing above.

That flexibility is central to the HHGS™ system. The HarvestTower™ can function as one tall vertical unit, two medium growing stations, or multiple smaller modules — giving gardeners more ways to experiment, adapt, and make the most of the space they already have.
